Flagg Races

Riding over stone walls at last years Flagg Races

Horse riding enthusiasts are getting prepared for a day out on the Peak District moors this Easter. The Flagg Races, which takes place on Tuesday, from 1pm, is the last event of its kind in the UK, taking riders across the Flagg Moor and over traditional Derbyshire dry-stone walls.

The point-to-point races have been held every Easter Tuesday since 1892 and attract audiences and riders from all over the country.

Sue Rodman, former secretary of the point-to-point event and a past winner of the members' race, said: "Horse and rider need to be more cunning and master tacticians to succeed at Flagg.

"By taking your own line, it is likely that all competitors will be going a different way so there is no one to judge speed or position against.

"You know if you're in the running only when you have jumped the next to last wall, and even then you still have 200m to the winning post and it's all uphill. That's a very long way on a horse after four miles."

Secretary Rachel McQueen, said: "Last year, many thousands of enthusiastic spectators enjoyed the thrill of thoroughbreds racing across spectacular open countryside."

Races are run under Jockey Club rules over a course with18 steeple chase fences of a minimum 4ft 3ins in height.

There are prizes for the "best turned out racegoer", with last year's winner picking up a weekend trip to the Cotswolds.

Car parking is free but racecourse entry is £10 per adult with children under 16 going for free.

Reserved car parking is available close to the racecourse but spaces are restricted and booking is strongly recommended.
