Decision delay on Dales allowance rise

Councillors have delayed a decision which would see them get a four per cent rise in their allowances.

At a meeting in Matlock Town Hall on Thursday June 26 Derbyshire Dales District Council voted to defer the motion until the next council meeting.

Trade union leaders have lashed out at the news, which comes as council workers prepare for a two-day strike over a 2.45 per cent pay offer.

At the district council meeting Cllr Steve Flitter said he was appalled by Union members comments.

"A union member said we should be ashamed of getting an increase.

"For our council, that has actually gone overboard to support its staff and to work considerately with unions, I find that appalling and think it damages relationships between us and staff."

Cllr David Fearn said it was important people realised the Independent Remuneration Panel, made up of members of the public, said the allowances should be increased according to inflation in May 2005.

He added: "We as councillors vote for our own pay increase but we know we are constrained much more than any MP.

"I think it is important to stress there is any Independent Panel and we will support their recommendation whatever it is."
