Derbyshire Dales Liberal Democrats
Chairman
Martyn Moss
I have been an active member of the Town Council for 12 years, serving as Mayor in 1998 and 1999, and currently responsible for Finance and Staffing. I helped to negotiate the lease and lottery bid for the Cavendish Fields Sports Association, which I have chaired twice. New changing rooms, an all-weather floodlit pitch and new drainage have produced a success story for thousands of users every year, mostly children. I was actively involved in the Town Council European funding initiative now helping the town's regeneration through the District Council led Matlock Masterplan.
I chaired Victim Support Derbyshire for 10 years, and now the Twinning Association and Derbyshire Dales Liberal Democrats.
I believe that it is people that matter, not the system, and it is because the Liberal Democrats owes allegiance to people, helping to inform and empower them, that we are liberals.
As an experienced and active Town Councillor and Focus Team member for many years, I have been closely involved in many aspects of community life in the town. Liberal Democrats have kept you in touch with Matlock's affairs throughout the year, not just at election time. Therefore I hope you will give me one of your votes for the District Council to help me to continue and extend my work for you in the future.

I would like to introduce myself as your Liberal Democrat candidate for Derbyshire Dales District Council in the May 3rd election.
I have lived in Pilsley for 8 years, where I am involved with Village Fair and Fell Race. Some of you may have recently seen me as Olive Baba in Baslow Players 'Ali Baba' pantomime. If so, please note that I'm not that frightening in real life!
I work as a Landscape Architect. As such I have a good working knowledge of the planning legislation which controls all development including the Peak District National Park, and I am also aware of the requirements and responsibilities of a small business. I have had experience of working for Councils so I am familiar with their working structure and interaction with the tax-paying public for whom they provide services.
I do enjoy our countryside and appreciate the ongoing management, forestry and farming practices which ensure that the Peak District retains its characteristic appearance and way of life. There is bound to be a balance of compromises to ensure economic survival of Peak District communities, and the nature of compromise is that you're not always going to get your own way. However, I strongly believe that communities should speak up to let their opinions be known, about schools, hospitals, transport, waste collection and highways. The relative governing bodies are providing a service for the public and unless the public comment, the service may not be fit for purpose.

I am 67 and married with 4 children. After graduation I spent 33 years in the chemical industry working in Marketing and Business Development. I have lived in Matlock since 1976. Since retirement in 2000, I have worked part time as a social research interviewer. This is excellent training for listening to and understanding peoples problems because people really matter, and it will be a privilege to represent their views on the Council. I have been a Liberal Democrat for many years and look forward to putting our policies into practice in local government.

I am employed by Severn Trent Water Ltd on the technical side of Water Regulations dealing with Legionella Risk assessment and as a Water Conservation Advisor. In this capacity I deal face to face with the general public every working day
I am married to Kate who has lived in the area all of her life with two grown up sons, both who still live within the area.
I first took an active part in supporting the Liberal Democrats back in the early to mid 1970's when I lived in Chesterfield, but at that time mainly in a supporting role. It was not until 1994 when I moved to Matlock that I started to get involved in this area.
I stood as a Lib Dem candidate for Matlock Green ward on Matlock Town Council at the Elections in 2003, and was elected to the Town Council by a large majority
For the last three years I have been Chair Person of the Matlock in Bloom committee and last year Matlock achieved a very creditable second place in the competition. I
am actively involved in events such as the Victorian Christmas Market, the Farmers Markets held in Matlock and the Local Business Network Forum . Also during the year 2005 /2006 I had the honour to be elected and serve as the Mayor of Matlock and as such, act as chairperson for the town council.
I feel it is now time to step up a level and stand for a seat on Derbyshire Dales District Council as I feel I can offer a fresh approach and new ideas and also support and listen to the local people (something I think is lacking with the current system)

I was born at Darley Hall, the fourth generation of my family to live in Darley Dale. My mother Jan was also born and brought up in Darley while my father, Danny Shaw, was from Snitterton. Both my brother Mark and I went to local schools, attended Darley Hillside Sunday School, played in the streets, going to many events in Whitworth Park and enjoying a very happy childhood growing up in Darley Dale.
I believe the time is right for me to put something back into the community. It's important, that the soon-to-be refurbished Whitworth Centre becomes much more user-friendly, so as to cater for the interests of both young and old. I feel that we are letting our young people down. There's a need to provide better facilities for the 11 to 18 year olds in particular. The Whitworth Centre could offer a wider range of activities both inside and out that would appeal to them.
Greater use of the park needs to be encouraged with a range of seasonal events to get all ages involved in having fun together. Inside the Centre all manner of educational and recreational activities are needed, including perhaps a library/book shop and an Internet café. I have several of my own ideas but I'm very interested to know what you think, as after all, it is your Centre.
I've had quite a diverse working life so far, including working as a photographer for the County Council's Museum Department, secretary to the Royal College of Music as well in Public Relations and after that working in the Television Industry in London as a Production Coordinator. If elected, many of the skills I've acquired would be put to good use for the benefit of the community.
Most importantly, I have a great interest in the people of our community. I care passionately about Darley Dale and everyone who lives and works here. It is in this spirit that I am standing for election as one of your local representatives on Darley Dale Town Council.

I am semi-retired but still work part-time as an international consultant in the Food Industry with particular reference to meat and dairy products. I have worked in over 20 countries including voluntary assignments throughout the world. I live in Stoney Middleton where my business has been based since 1980. I have been a member of the Parish Council since 2003 with all the problems of the school closure, the dam burst and flooding. I have also served on the Well Dressing Committee, the Stoney Middleton Book Project and has organised fund raising for the East Midlands Air Ambulance and other local charities. I am a lifelong Liberal and was chair of West Derbyshire Liberal Democrats from 2003 to 2005 .
As a manager in Unilever and director of a small company I have operated and actively supported equal opportunities, family friendly policies including flexible working hours, individual continued education and pension schemes for full and part time employees.
While I have no family I have experience of caring for elderly relatives both at home and in local residential homes. I am very aware of the difficulties encountered by the older residents of Derbyshire Dales and if elected would seek to improve sheltered housing and care facilities in the community.
With your support I look forward to returning to the community a small portion of the kindness, which has been extended to me over the years.

I have served St Giles and Tansley Ward on the District Council for 22 years. I currently lead the Liberal Democrat opposition group on the Council and also serve as Matlock's County Councillor and as a member of Matlock Town Council. I regularly attend Tansley Parish Council meetings. My wife Ann and I have five grown up sons and I manage the village shop in Winster.
In all my years as a councillor I have never made a promise on the doorstep because once elected you find there are reasons why your 'wish list' cannot be implemented. However, I do pledge that, once elected, I will serve the whole of the community to the best of my ability, seeking to improve people's lives and that of our surroundings. With one of your 3 votes on 3 May, I hope to continue representing you.

Derbyshire Dales District Council
Group Leader
David Fearn
David Fearn is leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on the Derbyshire Dales District Council
David Fearn is a happily retired teacher, married to Sandra for 42 years. David was born and brought up in Darley Dale and has been on the District Council continuously ever since it was formed in 1974. Currently he's Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. He represents the District Council on the Board of Trustees for the Mid-Derbyshire Citizens Advice Bureau. He is also the Town Council's governor for Darley Churchtown C of E Primary School.
A member of Amnesty International, David has always believed in the rights of the individual and freedom of expression. As a district councillor, he tried on three separate occasions to get the council to allow the public to speak at council meetings. Three times Labour and Conservatives councillors rejected his proposals. It was only when he became Leader of the Council from 1995-98 that he finally succeeded, introducing public participation at all council meetings. This is now accepted practice and supported by all political groups on the council.
David says, "For me the most rewarding part of being a councillor is trying to help people with individual problems. Over the years it's been a real privilege to represent Darley Dale, a place I really care about."

David Burton
David Burton first became a district councillor in 1979 after being encouraged to stand for election by the late Leslie Fearn, a much-respected Liberal and Methodist preacher.
In standing for election, David thinks it's important to declare what his political beliefs are. He says, "For myself, it is very necessary to declare my politics by standing as a Liberal Democrat. The electorate is entitled to know what my convictions are and every copy of our 'Focus' newsletter states clearly, "What We Stand For."
Since 1980 David has lived in Two Dales with his wife Ruth and their two daughters, Rebecca and Rachael. During 1995-96, in recognition of his service to Derbyshire Dales District Council, he was elected unanimously by his fellow councillors to be the Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council.
David believes, "Darley is a rich mixture of precious and quite different communities, thankfully held together and sustained by the actions of countless kind and caring people. I've valued the opportunity to serve Darley Dale as a district councillor and always try to give of my best to help people whenever I can. My simple desire is to continue to serve as a ward member for Darley Dale, challenging and representing our area in a sensitive and productive way."

I have lived in Starkholmes since 1980. I have recently retired from teaching, having had a previous career in civil engineering. I am married with three children, now grown up, who attended Highfields School.
I was elected to Matlock Town Council at a by-election in 1999, and I have been fully involved in the business of the Town Council since then, serving a year as Mayor of Matlock, taking a full part of the civic life of the town.
I believe I have served well, with a good record of participation in the affairs of the Council, and the public life of the town. I have good working relationships with all other members of the Council.
I now feel that I am equipped to take on wider responsibilities on the District Council. I have a working knowledge of council procedure and believe I can make an effective contribution to the business of the Council.
Long term, I want to try to reconcile two objectives - to encourage and guide the development of the Derbyshire Dales area whilst at the same time, preserving all that is good in the environment we all enjoy. Economic development is essential in any modern society and includes jobs and housing. We are witnessing a steady swing to service jobs, in the Dales often allied to the tourist industry. This needs encouragement and sympathetic management to obtain the best outcome. I fully appreciate the problems of young people wanting to find a home of their own in the locality but finding property prices way out of reach. I will seek to find imaginative ways to address this problem.
Over all, we people of the Dales are privileged to live in an outstandingly beautiful place. The Derbyshire Dales District Council has the direct responsibility of protecting this precious environment. If elected, I will do my best to see this responsibility fully discharged.
In Starkholmes, I have a long-term interest in speed reduction and effective traffic improvements needed on Starkholmes Road particularly with the new traffic arrangements to be implemented in the autumn. At Riber, I was opposed to the granting of planning permission to the castle and grounds. If it ever proceeds, I will do my best to make sure all the conditions of the planning consent are fully met.
I have opposed every application for new licences and extended hours for existing licenses for premises in the centre of Matlock because I feel we are now beyond saturation point and any further opportunity for drinking in the town centre is unnecessary and unwise.
My interests are wide and varied. I am a committed member of All Saints' Church and serve on several committees, as a Foundation Governor of All Saints, Junior School and the Area Coordinator for Neighbourhood Watch. My hobbies include singing, with more enthusiasm than talent I fear, and gardening with more energy than success. I am keenly interested in local affairs and believe I can bring considerable experience, depth of knowledge, and judgement, if re-elected, to Matlock Town Council.

Stephen Keane
Stephen was born and brought up in Darley Dale by his parents, Jane and Pat Keane. He attended Churchtown Primary School and Highfields School. He is married to Kirsty, whose parents are licensees at the Grouse Inn. Kirsty and Stephen have two children; Hayley aged10 and Shannon aged 7. As a young lad of twelve, Stephen worked six years for Jim Taylor, the local milkman. Over the last ten years he's been employed by Derbyshire County Council and currently holds the position of Senior Commissionaire. He is a member of the trade union, Unison. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and clay pidgeon shooting.
What he says
"I know what its like to grow up in Darley Dale and understand better than anyone how fortunate I've been to live here. I'm standing for election to the Town Council to give back something to the community. I think it's important for someone like me, who's lived here all my life, to take an active part in helping to shape the future for Darley Dale. I don't believe politics should play a part on parish or town councils. However, I'm standing as a Liberal Democrat because I support them locally and think that people have a right to know this."
Proposing Stephen's nomination as a candidate, David Fearn says, "We need more young people like Stephen to stand for election. It's important the Town Council properly reflects all age groups. Stephen is his own man and, if elected, I'm confident he'll do his best for Darley Dale."

Cate Hopkinson
I was born in Bonsall in January 1948 and was then known as Catrina Parker, moved to Matlock when I was 7 years old and attended Starkholmes Junior School, then I attended Charles White Secondary Modern School, by then all the people who knew me had started to call me Cate to which I am known today.
I married in 1968 and moved to live at Hurds Hollow for a number of years and had 2 sons Mark and Peter both of who attended All Saints Infant and Junior Schools and both went on to Highfields, both sons still live in Matlock.
I worked for Boots the Chemist initially on Dale Road then onto Firs Parade as a Pharmacy Dispenser for 10 years; I now work for the NHS at a local Doctors Surgery just outside of Matlock still as a Pharmacy Dispenser.
I have now been married to Barry for 10 years and the year 2005 to 2006 I was very proud when he was elected to serve the town of Matlock as Mayor.
Having lived nearly all my life in Matlock it is part of me, which I feel very passionate about, and I have seen the Town change some good and some not so good. If I am elected I will do my up most to serve Matlock and it's people, time moves forward and some changes have to be made, but I assure you if elected it would be an honour and a privilege to be one of the voices to be heard for what the people of Matlock would like to see. I am a local person and Matlock and its people are part of me.
On a lighter note I enjoy walking, reading, crosswords and also my family and friends are very important to me.

I have represented you on the District Council for the last 20 years and the Town Council for 24 years, during which time I have been Member Treasurer for many years, and held other offices. I have been closely involved in the Matlock Masterplan and improving the Town Council's new website - www.matlock.gov.uk
I have been a governor of All Saints Infant School since 1983 and a founding Trustee of the Cavendish Playing Fields Association, where we are striving to provide quality sports facilities. I am proud to be President of the local Branch of the Royal British Legion and also a member of the Civic Association, ATC Civilian Committee, Travel Society, Derbyshire Dales Ramblers and Twinning Association.
The next few years are vital to our town's future prosperity. We now have a town Masterplan and the Sainsbury's development is underway. I have always lived in Matlock and love the town. I believe that, with my colleagues, I am the right person to represent you in these interesting times. I trust I can rely on one of your votes again this year.

Steve was elected to the County Council in 1997 for the Matlock Division and represents Matock, Riber and Tansley. Steve sits on its Resources Improvement and Scrutiny Committee and is a member of the Derbyshire Fire Authority.

Starkholmes
Tony Rosser

As your Liberal Democrat candidate for Bakewell I commit myself to focus on your individual and local issues and to take these matters to the District Council and endeavour to resolve them to the best of my ability without compromising you or the Liberal Democrat policies.
I am a teacher with a broad spectrum of experience. I have taught English in The Netherlands although most of my career has been in England. I have been employed in the private and state sector, secondary and primary schools. My work as a supply teacher has enabled me to adapt to various environments rapidly and to understand and solve the problems of others.
I have been campaigning for the Liberal Democrats in Derbyshire Dales for some years now. Our percentage of the vote has been increasing. Thank you. Please take note of the National trend and support me and the Liberal Democrats.
The team I hope to join is your team to work for your wishes and your rights.
