Derby Job Losses Made Worse By Government's Failures

Rolls-Royce today announced that 9,000 jobs were to be cut from across their workforce, with about half expected to go in Derby.

Lib Dem Council group leader Cllr Ruth Skelton said "Our hearts go out to the thousands of families who woke up across Derby this morning unsure about their future. With the Covid-19 pandemic putting many more jobs at risk, this is a worrying time for so many.

"But we can't pretend this is just a natural disaster. Our Government's disastrous handling of the Covid-19 crisis has seen the UK have among the worst death rates. The Government's failures mean we will suffer more and take longer to recover from Covid-19's impact than our neighbours.

"And the Government's extreme Brexit makes things even worse. Companies across Derby have long been warning that this Brexit puts their costs up and will cost many, many jobs. Yet the government seem determined to press on with their extreme Brexit and make people pay the cost.

"It's time for the government to think again. They need to follow the advice of countries that have better protected their people and implement testing, contact tracing and effective patient isolation to protect us all. And they need to recognise that their Brexit plans simply aren't working. We need a pause right now to get Covid-19 under control and move away from the threat of No Deal Brexit so we can protect people's lives and jobs."
