What if you had done the same as Dominic Cummings?

The facts are clear: soon after the lockdown was imposed, when the rate of infection was nearly at its height, as Londoners specifically were being warned against leaving their coronavirus stricken city for rural areas, and at a time when his partner was clearly showing symptoms of the disease, the Prime Minister's Chief Advisor decided for himself where he would most like to spend lockdown.

This is a decision that millions of us would like to have taken - moving in to live with family members who had a nice garden, or encouraging parents or children to come to stay because we had more room. Doing so would have made lockdown so much more bearable.

But we believed the Government when it told us that this was a crisis and that everyone must play their part. In accepting our role in Saving Lives and Protecting the NHS, we Stayed Home. As a result, millions of worried adults have not seen their children or parents for over eight weeks.

We have read of Covid-19 victims dying alone, of unattended funerals, of nurses who have not risked hugging their young children, of care home workers who have lived on their work premises or in camper vans on site.

People who broke social-distancing rules have been punished with fines. Two other high profile rule-breakers have resigned; one for receiving a visitor, another for driving to their second home. Yet Cabinet Ministers and spokespeople for No. 10 say Dominic Cummings has no case to answer.

Sir Ed Davey (UK Lib Dems)Sir Ed Davey, candidate for leader of the Liberal Democrats, was unequivocal. There cannot be one rule for the politically powerful and different rules for the rest of us.

If an unrepentant Dominic Cummings does go unpunished, as looks look likely, has the Government abused our trust and made a mockery of our self-discipline?
