If you were less able or fortunate then tough. It famously led to Mrs May describing the Tory Party as the " nasty party" and Mr Cameron to sledge with huskies all in an attempt to de-toxify the parties image

In a private meeting with back bench MPs this week Boris Johnson said "The reason we have the vaccine success is because of capitalism, because of greed, my friends." Leaving aside the tastelessness of the comment around the first anniversary of the lock-down and after 125000 deaths from covid the statement is simply not true.

The facts say something very different. We have a vaccine because of massive public investment and the remarkable work of scientists at publicly-funded universities. The state helped fund the the construction of manufacturing facilities and roll out of vaccines was managed by the publicly funded and incredible National Health Service. Astra Zeneca have also agreed to supply developing countries with vaccine at cost

Apparently sensing he had made a gaffe, the Tory leader is understood to have repeatedly asked those at the 1922 Committee meeting to forget he used the term.

This slip does however explain what appears to be a relaxed attitude from the government to some pretty dodgy deals around the pandemic and the ideological fascination of outsourcing. Whether it be friends of the Conservative Party getting preferential access to contracts even when they have no previous experience in the sector, consultants receiving £375m to help construct the mal-functioning Test and Trace scheme ( according to the Daily Mail), the shocking content ( See here ) of school meals or contractors paying unqualified 17 year Sri Lankan undergraduate £1.57 per hour for a service that the government pays £19 to tutor left behind maths students, there have been plenty of examples of greed being on display in recent months

Our Prime Minister obviously sees all this as a good thing even if he would prefer us not to know!
