Cabinet secretary Simon Case has stepped down from his role heading the inquiry into alleged Christmas parties in Downing Street after reports that he attended a drinks event in breach of Covid rules. Another Civil Servant rather than an independent or police investigator has been appointed.

You are left wondering

Was it a further example of incompetence that someone was appointed without checking whether they themselves had participated in illicit Christmas celebrations?

Or was it known he was compromised by his own behaviour and was likely to go easy on the investigation?

Either way it is a further blow to the credibility of the Prime Minister. He can't even be trusted to get this simple appointment right!!
