Has Sunak lost his marbles?
At primary school, years ago, we used to get fired up playing marbles at break time but, seriously, why did Sunak have such a hissy fit over the 'Elgin' marble statues and cancel a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister? Not only was it rude but so petty it is beyond belief.
To give a bit of background, Lord Elgin a soldier, politician and diplomat, decided that instead of artists drawing and recording the magnificent marble friezes on the Parthenon, as originally planned, they would look rather nice in a private museum he was planning back home in Britain. Only problem was, once removed they became hostages to fortune. Elgin was going through a messy, expensive divorce and needed money, he sold them and the rest "is history" as they say. The British Museum has been the custodian of them ever since. But question is does it have the right to be their permanent custodian? This question has been asked so many times it really is surprising no-one has come up with the answer, no, sooner.
The Greeks are important partners as many migrants from Africa come across the Mediterranean to Greece and with the Gaza situation in a perilous state now is not the time for huffing and bluster from the right wing press and Tories about the marbles, however historically important. It is a sign of Sunak's weakness that he has to pick a fight with Greece to appease the Daily Mail rather than co-operating with a fellow democracy on real issues that impact this country, we need Greece in the fight to stop illegal migration and people trafficking. Most British people probably don't get the fuss about the marbles and could see the Greek point of view. It is upsetting for our Prime Minister to cancel a meeting at such short notice the Greek Prime Minister's taxi probably had to do a U-turn en route! Is this Prime Minister, incapable of having grown up conversations, with other leaders, and not be petty? The Greeks weren't asking to share our Crown Jewels, they just want to know when we might return theirs, even on temporary loan. What was so difficult about that?
We need grown up conversations, not tantrums of the Tory Right Wing. Britain's place at the European and World table requires intelligent, thoughtful politicians not the current knee jerk jingoism of the Tory Party.
