Hordes Of Retirees Playing Golf?
According to the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, this is apparently the malaise afflicting the British economy!
His rallying cry to end the doldrums of the British economy "Get off the golf course!", will go down in history as both ill-judged and completely misguided.
The herds of 50+ year olds who apparently took early retirement during the pandemic and, therefore, in one stroke undermined the British economic recovery, are a figment of the Chancellor's fevered imagination.
As reported in this article, recently published statistics from the pensions Consultants LPC just don't back it up and the think-tank The Resolution Foundation are urging the government to change direction and recognise the real problem.
So what is the issue, who is missing from our workforce?
People with young children and those with long term illness.
Parents have been shouting from the roof tops for so long they are hoarse; child care costs are so high it makes it impossible for lower income families to consider coming back to work. Childcare for the under two's needs to be either free or funded. It shouldn't be a barrier to employment, but the government have yet again ruled it out.
Similarly the pandemic has increased the number of people with long-term illness, who need support for periods of illness whilst in employment, so that they too can return to the work force with security.
This government is fixated with 'age' economics, and simultaneously undermining the economy by ignoring the realities. Leave the early retired out of it and let's get help into childcare and disability support where it is genuinely needed.
