It's Recycle Week
Postponed from its usual slot due to the death of the Queen, October 17th - 23rd is now Recycle Week 2022.
Residents of Derbyshire Dales do have access to several recycling methods when Serco is working well and we encourage all residents to make full use of them.
The District Council have focussed on food waste recycling for this week. Since the closure of the Vital Earth composting facility in Ashbourne (a story that we hope will become an article in the future) the waste that we put in the small green bin now has a very different journey.
The waste now travels to the Severn Trent anaerobic digester facility near Derby where it is decomposed in fermenters to form methane (burnt to raise steam that generates electricity for the national grid) with any solid waste remaining being used as a fertiliser / soil conditioner.
Much better than burying the food waste in landfill where any methane produced will contribute to global warming at 80 X the rate of CO2.
