Lib Dem led Alliance takes over the reins at Matlock
It was a significant moment last night in Matlock Town Hall as a Liberal Democrat led 'Progressive Alliance' took charge of Derbyshire Dales District Council. This was the first time that the Council had not been led by Conservatives in 24 years.
This first meeting of Full Council saw Lib Dem Cllr Steve Wain (Matlock West) elected as Chair, Lib Dem Cllr David Burton (Darley Dale) elected as Civic Chair and Lib Dem Cllr Steve Flitter (Matlock East and Tansley) elected as Leader.
Labour Cllr Peter Slack (Wirksworth) and Green Cllr Neil Buttle (Tideswell) were elected joint Deputy Leaders.
In his Leader's speech Cllr Flitter began by highlighting some of the shared priorities of the three parties in the Progressive Alliance;
- A new approach to the Local Plan
- A re-examination of housing policy
- A re-invigoration of strategies for biodiversity and climate change
- An open, inclusive and transparent way of working
He also confirmed the intention to grasp issues that have proved controversial in previous administrations such as public toilets and travellers sites.
