RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT at last!
The Sunak administration is congratulating itself on supposedly pulling off a major coup in negotiations with the EU over Northern Ireland. This is rank hypocrisy.
It was the insistence of Boris Johnson on a 'Hard Brexit', lying about its consequences and complete disregard of the region's history, that delivered the original mess in the first place. Johnson is now trying to resurrect his own political fortunes by yet again interfering and uttering opportunistic nonsense, with the sole intention of undermining Sunak and by default the safety and prosperity of Northern Ireland.
The Windsor Agreement, as it is now called, at least goes some way to right the wrongs that the Conservative government inflicted on the region, through Brexit, just as it had emerged from years of turmoil.
The Sunak government, however, does not have the right to pretend that it is their victory. It is a belated recognition that they got it wrong in the first place and it was their ignorance of the consequences of Brexit that created seismic shocks to its stability.
Northern Ireland may be a little known country on the periphery of the Conservatives' interests but it's stability has importance far beyond the confines of Boris Johnson's ego and the jingoism of the ERG.
