The Zahawi saga raises the question of the 'Super Rich' and their attitude to tax.

Whilst we welcome the overdue sacking of Nadhim Zahawi it raises the wider question of why the 'Super Rich' seek to avoid paying tax. It would seem that paying zero tax is a badge of honour and they portray tax as theft of their hard earned wealth.

Let's take the example of YouGov - a company founded by Zahawi and the way that he made his millions, it seems he owed around £3M on an income of £27M - this is a 10% rate and not the 40% that many of us pay. UK citizens are rightly angry because paying this tax would make no material difference to his lifestyle, having £24M instead of £27M is not the same as earning £24,000 vs £27,000.

We have allowed the Tories to peddle the myth that fair taxation discourages wealth generation. The LibDems believe differently, tax is a payment for State services such as education, health, security and infrastructure. Where does YouGov get its qualified employees? They get them from state educated people, they don't have to teach them to read or write or cover their health care costs or pay for the roads that takes Zahawi to his business meetings or the police that protects their offices.

Without taxes funding our state services YouGov would have failed. Instead of viewing tax as reduction of potential profits they should consider tax as a cost of trading. For example YouGov will have paid for IT and cleaners and they should view tax in the same way, paying for services that contribute to their business success.

We are proud to support a fair tax level and simply ask the 'Super Rich' to pay in to the system that enabled them to become so wealthy. Tax is an efficient way to develop a vibrant economy where businesses can thrive. Don't fall for the Tory myth of low taxes, vote for the Lib Dems, our policies support business growth & development within a properly funded State and fair wealth distribution that enables its citizens to buy goods and services that deliver a healthy profit for business
