Time to put a stop to this!
We should not have to share our pavements with HGVs
This photo taken this morning (24th June 2022) summarises the consequences of the failure of Derbyshire County Council to limit the movements of HGVs on Ashbourne's roads.
Not only are the significant numbers of HGVs on the town's roads responsible for the bulk of the emissions that have resulted in illegal levels of pollutants but they are also causing significant inconvenience and stress for those that need to walk beside those roads - because they live there!
It is not enough to offer a bypass that will not (by their own estimates) be completed before 2026 as the only solution to a problem that is a matter of life and health at the moment..
Chris Baker who lives on Buxton Road comments. " When I tried to walk with my grandchildren up Buxton Road to where we live, there was a queue of lorries stuck on the hill trying to travel past another snake of lorries coming nose to tail back down towards town. The lorries going up were mounted well over on the pavement and it wasn't at all safe for anyone to walk on the pavement back up the hill. The recently replaced kerb stones have already been dislodged and some of these damaged kerbs have been left loose in the road".
Since two HGVs cannot pass each other in several places on Buxton Road, is it not appropriate to restrict their movement?
