To Hell in a Handcart
While southern Europe has burned all summer in hellfire flames and scorching temperatures and Britain has suffered its coolest and wettest July in years, the Sunak regime has decided that now is the time to row back on principles of Carbon Reduction.
We may be lucky in Derbyshire to breathe clean air but our large cities can be an insufferable and toxic environment for the vulnerable. We literally do not have time for the blatant nonsense spouted by Tory members like Lord Frost that rising temperatures "are likely to be beneficial" for Britain.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone ULEZ expansion in London was a convenient whipping post in the Uxbridge by-election; but it was their refusal to extend the scrappage scheme for older vehicles that led to the burden of cost being thrust onto the public. But they didn't say that did they! They are hypocrites to their core.
Now we also see a frenzied rush to throw everything out, 100s of new oil and gas licences for the North Sea are literally in the pipeline. They seek easy solutions where there are none. Our future health and security is costly and needs open and comprehensive debate, not compressed into misleading spin and political hype.
But unfortunately until we see the back of this Tory government we will be accosted by their dangerous complacency and political expediency. They are unfit to govern through the existential crises that assail us.
